Mixed Poker Games and Acronyms
H.O.S.E is a form of mixed poker similar to H.O.R.S.E, with the exception being the removal of Razz from the mixed game rotation. Prior to HORSE poker growing in popularity, the most common mixed games were ½ holdem ½ stud, O.E, H.O.S.E and S.H.O.E. Notice both HOSE Poker and SHOE Poker use the same games; the order of rotation is all that is different. Now, if this all sounds gibberish to you, this is because you’re not familiar with the game H.O.R.S.E. poker or other forms of mixed games.

A mixed poker game is one where every certain number of hands, or after a certain time interval, the game is changed to the next one on the rotation. Many times, mixed games are identified using acronyms with each letter representing a particular game. We cover these letters below.
Mixed Poker Acronyms
H – Holdem (fixed limit)
O – Omaha Hi/Lo
R – Razz
S – 7 Card Stud
E – 7 Card Stud “Eight” or Better (because S was already taken)
A – Pot Limit Omaha (don’t ask us why)
These letters can be used to spell all sorts of neat words which can then be acronyms for the mixed games rotation. The most common forms of Mixed Games offered are: HORSE, HOSE, SHOE, HEROS HOE and OE. The mixed game that involved only 7 Card Stud and 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo is usually referred to as “mixed stud” rather than S.E, and likewise the game H.S is usually referred to simply as half holdem / half stud.
8 Game Mixed
Today the term “8-Game” is becoming well known, as it is now a prestigious WSOP tournament. The rotation used for this game is Limit Hold’em, Omaha Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, Seven Card Razz, Seven Card Stud, Seven Card Stud Hi-Low Split-8 or Better, No-Limit Hold’em, Pot-Limit Omaha and 2-7 Triple Draw Lowball.
At Play Horse Poker, we wonder if WSOP might consider changing the rotation if someone suggested a good acronym to account for all eight games. We already know from our mixed game acronym section that we have the letters HORSEA available, so let’s call NL Hold’em N and Triple Draw T. That leaves us with the letters HORSEATN to work with (scrabble anyone?). If we could get rid of the game Pot-limit Omaha, we could play H.O.R.N.E.T.S. and that’s catchy and actually perfect. Unfortunately, when we add the A in, the best we can come up with is A.N.O.T.H.E.R.S., and that’s neither catchy nor any good. Perhaps someone else can come up with an acronym to replace the term 8-Game mixed, for now we’ll have to stick with calling it 8-Game.
Full Tilt Poker offers 8-Game with Triple Draw removed, here it is called, go figure, 7-Game.
