Horse Poker Games
H.O.R.S.E. Poker is a 5-game mixed poker format where each letter of the name stands for a different game on the rotation. The 5 horse poker games are as follows:
H – Limit Holdem
O – Limit Omaha Hi Lo
R – Razz Poker
S – Seven Card Stud
E – Seven Card Stud Hi Lo (also known as Eight or Better)
To be good at H.O.R.S.E you’ll need to know each of the five HORSE poker games as well as have a basic understanding of H.O.R.S.E. poker strategy. The ideal way to learn HORSE is to take up one game at a time. The good news is online poker site Full Tilt Poker has each of the five horse poker games available in ring game, sit and go and multi-table tournament format. This way, if you’re only good at say three of the five horse poker games, you’ll be able to focus on the two you are weak at one game at a time.
Once you feel comfortable about your abilities in each of the H.O.R.S.E poker games, you’ll then be able to join the Horse ring games, Horse sit and goes and Horse multi table tournaments at Full Tilt Poker.
8-Game Mixed
Player’s good at H.O.R.S.E. will likely want to further their studies by learning No-Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha and 2-7 Triple Draw. The first two of these games are quite popular at Full Tilt, where for the last one mentioned you’ll need to look elsewhere. The reason that we suggest learning these other three games is because a popular form of mixed-poker is on the rise: 8-Game mixed. In 2010, the World Series of Poker replaced the prestigious $50,000 buy-in H.O.R.S.E. Championship with The Poker Player’s Championship which uses the 5 horse poker games but also adds No-Limit Hold’em, Pot Limit Omaha and 2-7 Triple Draw.
Learning H.O.R.S.E
If you’re new to poker, our strong suggestion is to start off by learning limit Hold’em, and then learn 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo. Limit Hold’em and 7 Card Stud Hi/Lo are traditionally the two games where the most money spews in a typical Horse poker game or tournament. It is required that you are good at them all to really beat HORSE long term for profit, but if you are as strong as possible in the two games we mentioned, that is the best way to increase your HORSE poker profits.
If you’re new to any of the Horse Poker games, use the lower section of our left sidebar menu to access information on each of the five poker games. Here, you’ll find not only how each game is played, but also some strategy for each game, as well as recommended reading.
